Campaign for Socialism activists played a key role in the
rejection of the Glasgow Housing Association's Business plan at a meeting
in Glasgow City Chambers this evening, 27th September 2001.
Through its journal The Citizen the Campaign for Socialism subjected the
business plan to severe criticism in early September. In an article on
Stock Transfer the Citizen argued 'If Central government and the Scottish
executive persist in treating local representatives as pond life who only
exists to deliver on a set of centralised objectives agreed behind closed
doors by policy advisers then this will only increase alienation from
the political process......Glasgow councillors have a duty to think of
the future and subject that business plan to critical scrutiny.'
At this evening's meeting two CfS activists Dave Moxham and Stephen Low
led a fierce attack on the Plan, which had been criticised by Glasgow
City Council's officials. None of the delegates from local parties present
supported the Business Plan.
Speaking after the meeting Dave Moxham vice chair of the Campaign for
Socialism said:
'Any future plans must include the unconditional removal of the debt burden.
Any stock transfers must be genuinely tenant led and include the Local
Authority option. I am opposed to public money being used to fund propaganda
material designed to force tenants into transferring. Instead tenants
should be offered a meaningful choice including Local authorities, co-operatives
and other democratically controlled forms of social housing. I also think
that the Westminster Government should facilitate the increase of funding
to the social housing sector by moving from the Public Sector Borrowing
Requirement to the General Government Finance Deficit used in other European
countries.
