Meacher and Wilson to debate Nuclear Power

Michael Meacher, Brian Wilson, Elaine Smith, Marlyn Glen, Stephen Boyd (STUC) and Neil Phillips (SERA)

STUC - Woodlands Road, Glasgow
Saturday 10th June at 11am

The question of whether new nuclear power stations are the way forward for energy policy in the UK is a controversial one and is exercising the minds of many in the Labour Party, not least elected members who are likely to have to take decisions on the matter in the near future.

Labour’s Campaign for Socialism has been discussing this issue and, given the various strands of opinion on the matter, decided that the best way forward was to have a open and comprehensive debate. The CfS are therefore pleased that eminent party members such as Michael Meacher, Brian Wilson, Elaine Smith and Marlyn Glen have accepted the invitation to lead the deliberations, along with other Stephen Boyd from the STUC and Neil Phillips from SERA. All members of the Labour Party are invited to attend this debate to be held in the STUC this Saturday.

Speaking about the event, Elaine Smith, Convener of CfS said “It is an eminently sensible and responsible approach to have a well informed debate on the important and controversial issue of nuclear power and I’m therefore pleased that the CfS is facilitating this opportunity for Labour Party Members”.

“I hope that members with an interest in this matter will take the opportunity to come along and hear well informed views on the issue from prominent speakers and make their own contribution to this vitally important discussion. I would particularly welcome the attendance of Jack McConnell since, although this matter is a reserved issue, decisions may have to be taken in the Scottish Parliament about whether or not to permit such a development in Scotland.”
